Global Young Leader Program: The Learning by Doing Expedition

Forty-five students of SKEMA Business School are in Israel for a 10-day “Learning by Doing Expedition” for discovering a unique ecosystem, popularly known as the Silicon Wadi or Start-Up Nation. They will visit international companies and Advanced Research Technology Parks, while doing an in-depth journey in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Corporate Social Responsibility, in partnership with the Ben Gurion University of Beer Sheva.

SKEMA students landed last Sunday in Israel. For most of them, it was their first time in the Silicon Wadi. On their first night in Israel, the future Global Young Leaders attended a conference of the MBA seminar around social entrepreneurship organized by the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Institute for Social Leadership at Ben Gurion University in Beer-Sheva.

The Start-Up Nation

It is the second time that the Global Young Leader Program decided to take students to the startup nation. But, why is Israel called this way?

According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, “One of the few benefits of being a small country is the ability to create a successful ecosystem”. From this standpoint, the government supports startups by financing their R&D costs. Further, the unique compulsory military service of the country strengthen entrepreneurial and responsible mindsets.

A learning by doing expedition

As part of discovering the Silicon Wadi, the GYLP association has organized events dedicated to this year’s theme “Wisdom of Practice”, in close coordination with our partner, Ben-Gurion University. The 45 SKEMA students coming from all SKEMA campuses in France and the 25 Ben-Gurion students are actively engaged in pedagogical activities with a focus on social entrepreneurship and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

This 10-day entrepreneurial trip encompasses conferences, a visit to Jerusalem, a hackathon at Ben-Gurion University, Beer Sheva, as well as learning about innovation and entrepreneurship within Israel’s technological environment.

Building from Coretta Scott King’s statement: “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” SKEMA students will take part in the “Social Solidarity Conceptual Hackathon” to deliver actual sustainable solutions to social issues. They will also visit high-tech companies and Research & Development Tech Park such as the Advanced Technology Gav Yam Park in Negev in Beer Sheva. This technology park results from the fruitful cooperation between the leading forces in academia, R&D, technology, business, and industry designed and built to the highest standards in Israel and around the world

The program aims at promoting and fostering an entrepreneurial mindset amongst SKEMA students. It will create synergies between SKEMA Business School and Ben-Gurion University in an innovative ecosystem.
